Being the largest lake in New Zealand, Lake Taupo is a popular place for tourists especially backpackers to visit. If extreme activities like the fall from the sky are not your thing, there is much more quiet activities on offer, Lake Taupo is a great fishing spot and is known as the capital of rainbow trout in the world! You must have a fishing license unless you join a tour organized fishing though.
All kinds of water sports are also available on Lake Taupo, including scuba diving, kayaking, sailing and rafting and even Jetboating on the Waikato River, which is the case of Lake Taupo drains.

In recent years, Taupo is world renowned for being a destination event. Major national and international events held at Lake Taupo include the A1 Grand Prix is the world cup of motorsport and the biggest international event of the car in New Zealand.
Ironman New Zealand Challenge is also held in Taupo in March of each year. One of the most popular has been the Great Lake Cycle Challenge, which attracts over 10,000 cyclists each year.
