Stranraer can be one of the most famous in Scotland, but the city in the south-west of Scotland has an abundance of history to attract visitors.

The city was born of colonization around Stranraer Castle - or castle of St. John - which was built around 1510. The four-storey L-plan tower was designed and built by Adair of Kilhilt and over the years has served several different purposes - a home, court, jail, garrison, and in its current form, as a museum showing the history of justice in the Middle Ages to today. The castle was opened to the public since 1990.

It is not only the castle of Stranraer which has historical relevance. football team of the city - who play their home games at Stair Park near the center of the city - is the third oldest club in Scotland, having been formed in 1870. In the 2008/09 season they were relegated to the Scottish Third Division means that for the eighth successive season they played in a different league from the previous year. Despite relegation, the club's fans are relieved that they still have a support team in January 2009, the President revealed that there was a 50-50 chance that the club folding due to financial difficulties. However, in March, the club was saved by a consortium of local companies who took the club and its debts.

Stranraer port played an important role in the Second World War with many submarines and ships flying built there, including the Supermarine Stranraer who was named after the city. Sir Winston Churchill visited Stranraer in 1942 and made his second visit to the war in the United States from Scottish ports.

Travelling from Northern Ireland to Stranraer ferry has its roots in history as it was used as a road droving farmers taking their animals to market in Dumfries. Today, the ferry to Stranraer service is used by travelers and tourists who want to travel across the Irish Sea. Stranraer port was the first in Britain to offer a roll on, roll off service giving the city a boost in popularity.

In addition to being steeped in history, Stranraer has the beauty of the modern era. The city has in abundance with its center easily recognizable, full of colorful buildings and houses that help illuminate all day and look especially picturesque on a sunny day.
