Looking to rough in the great outdoors in northern MN or possibly Dakotas ... need help!a I want to take the fresh air and be totally isolated from all possible campers nearby. I'm going to tent camping, of course. In addition, it must be very picturesque and surrounded by a lot of wildlife. I just need to know where to do it if I could park my car and walk and not have to pay. Across the north central United States would be better. Thank you in advance that every bit of information would help because I am totally clueless on the subject.
What you describe is called "backpack" in the U.S. and thousands, even millions, of people enjoy hiking every year. When hiking you realize everything they need to hiking and Camping on the back in a backpack including food and water, sometimes drives to the trailhead where you park your car and proceeds to follow a track in the desert, where at some point they have camp, cook dinner and sleep outside. The next day, they either pack up and go to another point and the camp again, go on a day hike from their base camp may be a peak near the top, or pack up and go home.
A good introduction to hiking lightweight book: http://www.amazon.com/Lighten-Up-Complet ...
The best way to get into the hike is to visit the websites for the various parks that interests you as Voyageurs National Park and the Mississippi River National Recreation Area and: http://www.nps.gov/voya/
