Landowners and farmers do not welcome unwanted visitors, and the South Downs National Park discourage camping on the dunes, so while you may prefer to go "au naturel" and camp wild without the benefits a camping recognized, first consider these Sussex sites, which are rustic, rural feel and relatively remote.

Some campers are not keen interested in caravans and all the paraphernalia that accompanies them, though the emphasis here is on campsites that offer in terms of location, ease and peace at home.

Foxhole Campsite

Foxhole Campsite and camping barn are located in the most beautiful spot in a fold in the Downs in the Seven Sisters Country Park, near the famous chalk cliffs. In a few minutes' walk from the beach wild Cuckmere Haven and the nature reserve, it must be one of the most beautiful camping sites across Sussex. Open from early April until late October, and housing for only 20 small tents, it is essential to book in advance. Foxhole has basic facilities.

Do not forget your flashlight, as the way back from one of several local pubs after dark could be a bit treacherous tidal river Ouse runs through the park of the sea, and created several lakes Ox- Bow en route. Sheep and wildlife abound, this area is a paradise for bird-watcher's ... it is quite wonderful for the rest of us, too.

If you're wanting to be green from the nearest train station is Haywards Heath (London to Brighton line), where you can catch a bus near the site.

Although they do not accept caravans, motorhomes or trailer tents, they have an interesting selection of trailers and back, and an old red buses for rent - a particularly attractive option during the colder months. Fires, barbecues and well-behaved dogs are allowed. There is also a shop on the site, which rents mountain bikes.

Blackberry Wood, pubs, shops, post office and museum near Ditchling are all easily accessible on foot, by bike or car. The old town of Lewes, Sussex is a little over 10 minutes (by car) and Brighton in twenty minutes, but you'd better leave your car behind and take the train from Hassocks.
